Free Practice flash: Borković times it right in the ETCC at Zolder

Timing was everything during Free Practice for rounds nine and 10 of the FIA European Touring Car Cup in Belgium as SEAT Single Make Trophy contender Dušan Borković timed his run to perfection to go fastest in the final session before qualifying this afternoon.

The ETCC drivers were greeted with a damp but drying Zolder this morning, which meant those still circulating at the end of the session were able to go quicker with Borković setting his best lap on his final run.

Davit Kajaia, who topped the timesheets in the closing stages, settled for second in his TC2T-specification BMW with the Georgian a mere 0.066s slower than the pacesetting Serbian Borković’s faster and more up-to-date car.

Mato Homola, a winner in Czech Republic earlier this month, was third fastest in his SEAT with Petr Fulín and Ronny Jost close behind in their similar Spanish machines. Andreas Pfister was sixth best in another SEAT with Peter Rikli out in front in TC2 in his Honda Civic, one place ahead of class rival Michal Matĕjovský’s BMW.

Turkish drivers Ibrahim Okyay and Aytaç Biter completed the top 10 in their BMWs but it was a troubled Free Practice for their countryman Ümit Ülkü, whose hopes went up in smoke when his BMW caught fire, albeit within sight of the pit lane where the flames were quickly extinguished.

Young German Ford Fiesta driver Niklas Mackschin once again set the pace in Super 1600 with Luxembourg’s Gilles Bruckner less than half a second slower in another Fiesta.

While all ETCC drivers use Yokohama tyres, some began the session on wet-weather covers with others using ‘slicks’. But by the time the track had largely dried out, all drivers were on the dry-weather tyres.

Qualifying is next for the ETCC drivers with the 30-minute session due to begin at 15h00 local time. Click here to view the Free Practice classification.
