ETCC is great, says rookie racer Rodrigues

José Rodrigues described the FIA European Touring Car Cup as a “great championship” after his one-off appearance in the series at his home event, ETCC Race of Vila Real.

Rodrigues usually competes in the ADAC TCR Germany series but switched to the ETCC in his Target Competition Honda Civic on the challenging street track in northern Portugal.

After finishing third on the road – from third on the grid – in Race 1, Rodrigues was demoted to fourth following a clash with Igor Stefanovski, which earned him a 30-second penalty. He was fourth again in Race 2.

“It was a great fight with Stefanovski but I think it was a great result for me and I’m very happy with my performance today in this great championship,” said Rodrigues, a protégé of World Touring Car Championship leader Tiago Monteiro. “It’s an amazing circuit and it’s a pleasure for me to [race] these great drivers. It’s not possible [for me to do more ETCC races this year] because I’m doing TCR Germany but it’s a pleasure for me to be here.”

Mladen Lalušić added to his FIA European Touring Car Cup scoring tally with sixth place in Race 1 at ETCC Race of Vila Real last month.

Zsolt Dávid Szabó’s impressive performances in the FIA European Touring Car Cup have been rewarded with a step up to the FIA World Touring Car Championship with Zengő Motorsport for WTCC Race of Argentina later this month.

Petr Fulín has praised FIA European Touring Car Cup rival Norbert Nagy for giving him a clean fight at ETCC Race of Vila Real last week.

Andreas Pfister left Portugal for his native Germany with more FIA European Touring Car Cup points in the bag following an encouraging performance in Vila Real last weekend.
