While Dušan Borković continues to be the fastest FIA European Touring Car Cup driver in action at Autodromo Pergusa, Franz Engstler emerged as a contender for TC2T category honours by heading the class in his BMW.

Engstler (pictured), who doubles as boss of LIQUI MOLY Team Engstler, is making a one-off ETCC appearance in the Sicilian finale and was fourth fastest overall behind the SEAT Single Make Trophy trio of Borković, Mato Homola and Petr Fulín.

Andreas Pfister was fifth fastest ahead of fellow Single Make Trophy driver Ronny Jost. Engstler’s team-mate and TC2T title favourite David Kajaia was seventh with Peter Rikli sitting the TC2 pace in his Honda. Aytaç Biter was ninth with Rikli’s teenage protégé Daniel Conrad P10.

Michal Matĕjovský, who is on course to win the TC2 crown this weekend, was P13 with Ulrike Krafft fastest in Super 1600 in her Ford Fiesta.

The 30-minute Free Practice session was in readiness for Qualifying, which gets underway at 08h00hrs local time on Sunday. Double points will be awarded to the fastest three drivers in each of the four ETCC categories.

Both of Sunday’s 11-lap races will be shown live on Eurosport at 11h00 and 13h00 CET.

Christjohannes Schreiber will start ETCC Race of Vila Real defending a slender one-point lead in the battle to be crowned FIA European Touring Car Cup champion for 2017.

ETCC Race of Vila Real is set for a live television extravaganza with TVI showing both races as they happen on several digital platforms including TVI Player, TVI24.iol.pt and Facebook.com/tvi24.

Top Portuguese driver Fábio Mota will be hoping to make a big impact on the streets of Vila Real this weekend as he looks to build on his FIA European Touring Car Cup podium double last time out in Germany. This is what the LEIN Racing SEAT driver had to say ahead of his home race.
