MATĔJOVKSÝ WINS RACE 1 AS MONJE HITS TROUBLE
29 Apr 2012

Michal Matějovský, driving a SEAT León TDi, won the first ETCC race at the Slovakia Ring, while there were class victories for Andreas Pfister (SMT), Aleksandar Tošić (SP) and Kevin Krammes (S1600).

Matějovský led into the first corner, after a poor start from pole-sitter Fernando Monje, and much of the race saw the pair fighting for the lead, but loose flat bottom on Monje’s car first caused the Spaniard to lose the lead he’d taken on Lap 3 and then a puncture on the last lap meant he finished outside the top ten. The Single-Make trophy competitors Stian Paulsen and Andreas Pfister also became embroiled in the fight for the lead at one point, but Paulsen eventually had to settle for fourth place overall and second in the SMT to Pfister. The BMW of Petr Fulín started from the back of the grid after a rule infringement before qualifying; the drive of the race then saw the Czech driver carve his way through the field to finish third overall.
Another driver to start from the back of the grid was Kevin Krammes; again, a superb drive saw the Ford Fiesta driver up to second place in Super 1600 by the end of Lap 1 and leading the category after Lap 2 - a lead he held until the end of the nine-lap race.
Finally, one of the most enthralling battles in the race was in the Super Production class, in which Aleksandar Tošić eventually overcame Nikolay Karamyshev to win the category by just over half a second.
